    Durham University’s Centre for the Study of Jewish Culture, Society and Politics and the Centre for Catholic Studies, in collaboration with Ushaw College, are pleased to announce the forthcoming conference:

     

    NEW SONG: Biblical Hebrew Poetry as Jewish and Christian Scripture for the 21st Century

    Ushaw College, Durham

    24 - 25 June 2019

     

    This conference will bring together leading scholars from around the world to discuss the why and how of reading Biblical Hebrew poetry as Scripture in today's world. The aim of the conference is recontextualization with the goal of moving beyond reconstructive historical work to constructive theological work.

     

    Featured speakers include:

    • ·         John Goldingay: On Reading Genesis 49
    • ·         Ben Sommer: Parallelism and Preaching: Poetic Form and Religious Function
    • ·         Ellen Davis: The Psalms, the Poetry of Healing
    • ·         David Firth: Hannah's Song (1 Samuel 2:1-10): On the Interface of Poetics and Ethics in an Embedded Poem
    • ·         Revd Megan Daffern: How Wise are the Psalms as Prayers?
    • ·         Robert Hayward: Observations on Exodus 15 (Shirat Ha-Yam) in Jewish and Catholic Liturgy
    • ·         Katie Heffelfinger: Truth and Hidden Things: Reading Isaiah 45:9-25 as Scripture
    • ·         Rabbi Shai Held: Title TBC
    • ·         Yisca Zimran: Title TBC
    • ·         The conference will include an After-Dinner Poetry Reading and Discussion with award-winning poet and professor, Michael Symmons Roberts.

    CONFERENCE REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN.  Conference packages start at £45 (for students). 

     

    Limited accommodation is available at Ushaw College bookable on a first come first served basis. Delegates can also book local hotels with a complimentary conference coach provided between Durham City and Ushaw College as required.  (This needs to be booked at the time of registration.)
