The University of Dayton (UD) seeks an outstanding educator and scholar in the Catholic social tradition to serve as the Fr. Ferree Chair of Social Justice (“the Ferree Chair”). This is an exceptional opportunity for a distinguished scholar to advance interdisciplinary teaching and research in the Catholic social tradition that addresses issues of social justice.

The Ferree Chair will work across the University to generate, advance, and sustain influential scholarship, teaching, and community engagements (local, national, and international) that advance social justice in pursuit of the common good, in alignment with the missions of the Society of Mary and the University of Dayton.  The Ferree Chair is a distinguished position providing a visionary teacher-scholar the opportunity to lead innovative, high impact scholarly research, curricular and pedagogical initiatives, and community-grounded collaborations that advance social justice in pursuit of the common good.  The Ferree Chair should bring national visibility to the University’s commitment to the common good, helping to position the University as a leader in this arena.

The Ferree Chair will give special attention to opportunities for productive collaboration with University centers, institutes, and other endowed chairs, which provide significant resources and partnerships. These include the Human Rights Center, home to the to the nation's first undergraduate human rights studies program and host of the biannual Social Practice of Human Rights Conference and the Oscar Romero Human Rights Award; The Fitz Center for Leadership in Communitywhich builds partnerships for both comprehensive community building and as a context for connected learning and scholarship; and the Hanley Sustainability Institute which advances the University’s commitment to sustainability through a cross-disciplinary collaboration among the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Engineering, School of Education and Health Sciences, School of Business Administration, the University of Dayton Research Institute, and within the community.  The Ferree Chair will also draw upon the partnership of numerous other endowed chairs in the humanities, social sciences, sciences, and the professions.

The Ferree Chair is a tenured faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.  Tenure will be held in an academic department and may be appointed jointly in an appropriate school, department, center, or institute, contingent on the approval of the provost and associated dean(s).

    Required Qualifications

    1. Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in one or more of the academic disciplines or departments represented in the University.
    2. A record of research, teaching and service sufficient to warrant appointment as Associate Professor in the College of Arts and Sciences, or one of the professional schools at the University of Dayton.
    3. A record of excellence in teaching and researchwith substantial focus on the Catholic social tradition and social justice to aid in the formation of students and faculty in the Catholic social tradition.
    4. Because of the position’s role in aiding in the formation (which is considered ministerial in nature) of students and faculty in the Catholic Social Tradition and Social Justice, the candidate must be a practicing Catholic.

In addition to the above requirements, appointment at the rank of Professor requires a record of research, teaching, and service commensurate with the criteria for promotion to the rank of Professor in the College of Arts & Sciences or one of the professional schools at the University of Dayton.
