Durham University’s Centre for Catholic Studies (CCS) in partnership with the Department of Catholic Studies at Duquesne University invite you to join us for the second ONLINE Lived Catholicism conference:

Paradox and Prophecy: Why the Study of Lived Catholicism Matters

    15 & 16 November 2021

This conference will consider: what are the paradoxes of Lived Catholicism and how can it be authentically prophetic? bringing together theologians, ethnographers, anthropologists, human geographers, psychologists and ethicists among others for interdisciplinary exchange and encounter.

    Confirmed plenary speakers include:

    ·    Michele Dillon (author of Post-Secular Catholicism)

    ·    Valentina Napolitano (author of Migrant Hearts and the Atlantic Return: Transnationalism and the Roman Catholic Church)

    ·    Clare Watkins (author of Disclosing Church: An Ecclesiology Learned from Conversations in Practice)

    ·    Massimo Faggioli (author of Joe Biden and Catholicism in the United States)

We are delighted that our speakers of 2020, Robert Orsi, Tricia Bruce, Alana Harris and Stephen Bullivant, will also be involved.

Still open - CALL FOR PAPERS deadline for proposals - 1 October 2021

We welcome two kinds of presentations:

    • ·         15-minute papers, presented live in several streams.
    • This year we are interested in developing streams dedicated to particular themes.
    • One stream of 15-minute papers relates to aspects related to child sexual abuse within the Catholic context. What does abuse in the Catholic context reveal about Catholicism? What does it expose about the everyday practices of the lay people, priests or religious, ecclesial self-understanding, or theology? How does the institutional response raise questions? What needs to transform, and how do we transform the field of Catholicism in the light of abuse? Why is the study of Lived Catholicism of relevance in researching this field?
    • and
    • ·         5-minute poster presentations, pre-recorded on video.
