Title: Assistant Professor, Latino Studies and Social Justice

Status: Full-time/Tenure-Track, 9 Months, Commence [Fall 2022]

Position Summary
The Division of Public Affairs at Dominican University of California is seeking a teacher/scholar/activist to teach in our newly revised community-engaged Latin American and Latino Studies minor and our Social Justice major. While the discipline of specialization is open, the position entails a focus on Latino communities including indigenous migrants and U.S. issues (domestic and foreign policy/laws). The successful candidate will have an expertise in community-based and social justice scholarship and organizing, and be bilingual with an ability to teach at least two service-learning courses in Spanish to assist primarily heritage speakers refine and expand their Spanish vocabulary and skills (not primarily grammar courses but focused on community issues, field specific vocabulary, interpretation and linguistic capital). The successful candidate for this tenure-track Assistant Professor position will be committed to social justice for immigrant communities, value working with a diverse student population (many of whom are first generation), and dedicated to best practices in community engagement. Secondary emphases: social science expertise in U.S. public policy in relation to structural social change and/or post-colonial studies. Tenure-track faculty members are required to participate in scholarship and university service. All faculty adhere to requirements in the Dominican Faculty Handbook.

Responsibilities
● Teach five four-unit courses per year, which includes two service-learning courses in Spanish as well as courses within our Social Justice major that also serve as general education courses for all students.
● Shape future course offerings in both the community-engaged Latin American and Latino Studies minor, the Social Justice major, public policy programming, and participate in our Service-Learning program.
● Scholarship/publication consistent with Dominican’s requirements for tenure, with emphasis on community-engaged research and scholarship. Three-unit release for scholarly work.
● Attend and contribute to faculty meetings and other professional development activities, including shared governance via service on university-wide committees and through participation in faculty forum
● Mentor and academically advise students
● Uphold academic performance standards and integrity

Required Qualifications
● Earned Ph.D., or have one in hand by time of appointment
● Bilingual with ability to teach courses in Spanish
● Demonstrated involvement in community-engaged scholarship

Preferred Qualifications
● Academic teaching experience
