The Theology Department of St. Mary's University in San Antonio invites applications for a tenure-track position in Catholic Theological and Social Ethics beginning August 2022 at the rank of assistant or associate professor.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a robust academic research agenda and excellence in teaching. The ordinary teaching load is twelve credit hours per semester and includes courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
The area of specialization is open, but the candidate will be expected to teach a wide range of courses in moral theology.
The department is particularly interested in candidates who have demonstrated interest in the areas of virtue ethics, environmental ethics, and the application of Catholic Social Teaching to the realities of the Southwest such as asylum and migrations. The successful candidate will also teach a core introduction to theology which synthesizes the broader questions of faith seeking understanding from the perspective of the Catholic tradition of the University's Marianist founders.
Because the undergraduate core courses are required of students from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds, the successful candidate will demonstrate potential to create a learning environment that builds on diversity and respect for all. In addition to excellence in teaching and academic research, the department seeks candidates prepared to contribute in the "family spirit" of the Marianist charism through service to the department, College, University, and community.
This position is part of a cohort of two new positions in theology. One of the two new hires will also have the opportunity to be appointed as the Charles H. Miller Sr. M.D. Chair in Human Dignity as early as 2023. This endowed chair carries a reduced teaching load and elevated expectation for community outreach and cooperation with the Center for Catholic Studies. The Miller Chair in Human Dignity
The Charles H. Miller Chair in Human Dignity is a tenured faculty appointment in the Theology Department with a reduced teaching load to support research, education, and outreach on themes of human dignity. The Chair in Human Dignity will serve along with other endowed chairs on the internal advisory board of the Center for Catholic Studies. A commitment of three years is expected, after which the Chair in Human Dignity may be renewed by mutual agreement or converted to a regular tenured faculty appointment.
The Chair in Human Dignity will be committed to enabling others to realize the potential they have as human beings made in the image and likeness of God. The Chair in Human Dignity is expected to communicate clearly and effectively the insights of research in the classroom, across campus, and in the local community to parish groups of various educational backgrounds. In this way, the position requires interest and aptitude for engaging with community partners and external audiences across the Archdiocese of San Antonio. The study of universal human dignity encourages a breadth of interdisciplinary approaches drawing from the Catholic intellectual tradition. In honor of the donor's contributions to the medical profession, connections relevant to healthcare ethics are especially welcome.
The Chair in Human Dignity will have a distinguished record of research and teaching. The Chair will understand Catholic doctrine and have theological and pastoral sensitivity to the church in the southwest as an institution and community of believers with a special affinity to Mary. In line with the donor's intent, the Chair will be invited to draw from their own Catholic faith, the St. Mary's community, the Marianist charism, and the Catholic intellectual tradition broadly to advance research and education promoting human dignity.
