Journal of Global Catholicism to sponsor Graduate Scholar Symposium

The Journal of Global Catholicism is an international, interdisciplinary peer-reviewed journal that seeks to understand diverse forms of lived Catholicism with attention to their significance for theoretical approaches in anthropology, history, sociology, media studies, psychology, theology, and philosophy.

To foster collegiality and mentorship in this emerging field, the editors of the Journal invite applications for a Graduate Scholar Symposium. Participants will engage with established scholars in the field of Global Catholicism to share and discuss papers focused on lived Catholicism in a global context. Participants will be expected to revise and submit their articles for consideration in a forthcoming issue of the Journal of Global Catholicism.

The symposium will be conducted in a hybrid format. Graduate scholars in the United States will present and participate in person at the College of the Holy Cross; graduate scholars outside the U.S. will present and participate via Zoom. The symposium will be facilitated by the editors of the Journal of Global Catholicism and other senior scholars.

Eligibility

Applicants will be students in graduate programs who have not completed all requirements for the Ph.D. but have completed an M.A. or equivalent course work. Graduate scholars studying at universities outside the United States are particularly encouraged to apply. Proposals can be from any specific academic discipline in the humanities or social sciences but must be focused on an aspect of lived Catholicism — an intentionally broad designation that encompasses the various ways Catholicism is expressed and embodied through practical human activity. Submissions are encouraged that explore what it means to be Catholic today by considering the implications of Catholic expressions and embodiments in relation to issues of global concern. Proposals addressing lived Catholicism in the U.S. or Canada must show interrelatedness with lived experience outside of North America.

Applications

Participation in the symposium will be on the basis of a competitive application process.  Applicants should submit the following documentation:

1) a cover letter;
2) 500 word abstract for the paper to be presented;
3) one recommendation;
4) a curriculum vitae.

Timeline

Applicants will be contacted regarding their proposals in mid-January. Comments on papers will be sent to authors one month prior to the symposium. The symposium will be held April 22-23, 2022, subject to COVID-19 regulations, at the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, MA and via Zoom.

Compensation

Each participant will receive an honorarium of $500 USD at the completion of the symposium. U.S. citizens and valid visa holders who participate in person at the College of the Holy Cross will be compensated for travel and lodging expenses. Unfortunately, the Journal of Global Catholicism cannot fund travel expenses for participants from outside the United States who will participate virtually. However, all participants are eligible for the honorarium.
