The Department of Religious Studies at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic university, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor in theological and social ethics, to begin Fall 2024. Areas of specialization are open, but they should complement existing SCU faculty strengths; specific areas may include political ethics; economic ethics; ethics of globalization; war and peace; human rights; conscience; environmental/sustainability ethics; or bioethics/public health ethics. A strong candidate will offer evidence of engaging social issues from within the Christian tradition (broadly understood) using constructive and contextual methodologies. Candidates must demonstrate familiarity with and an ability to engage Catholic Social Teaching as well as a strong knowledge of the philosophical and theological dimensions of the current scholarly field of ethics nationally and/or globally. In addition, candidates should demonstrate research and teaching interests that bridge more theoretical ethical approaches (religious and philosophical) with pressing social, political, and cultural issues. Successful candidates will demonstrate that they pursue their scholarship and teaching within a framework committed to the goals of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Candidates must also show evidence of excellent university-level teaching, an agenda for scholarship leading to publication in the areas of theological and social ethics, and an understanding of the University’s Jesuit, Catholic mission.
