    POSITION ANNOUNCMENT

    Position:                            Full-Time Faculty (Religious Studies)

    Department:                      Humanities

Reports To:                       Chairperson, Department of Humanities

Madonna University, a Catholic university in the Felician Franciscan tradition, invites applications for a full-time (9 month) faculty position, at the rank of assistant professor, beginning no later than August 2024.

DESCRIPTION: Madonna University offers an undergraduate major and minor in Religious Studies, a minor in Philosophy, and a Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry. These programs are housed in the Humanities Department in the College of Arts and Sciences. Madonna is located in Livonia, Michigan, a western suburb in the Detroit metropolitan area. Our students represent the rich range of cultures, ethnicities, and religions that characterize Southeast Michigan (and beyond) and are a mix of traditional and non-traditional, commuter and residential students. The candidate for this position will be able to teach across the range of Religious Studies, including survey of religions courses, scripture, systematics, social justice, historical, and practical theology. A secondary competence in Philosophy is desirable. The primary responsibility of the position is teaching undergraduates from a wide range of backgrounds. Most of this teaching will be for the Core Curriculum, in which the required courses aim toward instilling religious literacy and an appreciation of Madonna’s heritage and Franciscan values. Teaching on the graduate level for the M.A. program is also required. Secondary responsibilities include student advising and recruitment, committee work, and ongoing professional development and scholarly activity. Active and collegial participation in the life of the university and commitment to student success are expected.

QUALIFICATIONS: A terminal academic degree (Ph.D., S.T.D., Th.D.) in Religious Studies or Theology is required. ABDs will be considered if the degree (or successful defense) is completed by the time of appointment. The successful candidate will give evidence of an understanding of and commitment to Madonna’s mission and values, the significance of a liberal arts education in the Catholic intellectual tradition, and a willingness to work collaboratively with colleagues from across the University.

SALARY: Commensurate with academic qualifications and experience. Excellent benefit package.

REVIEW OF APPLICATIONS will begin February 15, 2024. Interested applicants should submit: a cover letter describing qualifications, teaching philosophy, and appreciation for Madonna’s mission and values; a curriculum vitae; and contact information for three references. (Please do not submit reference letters at the time of application. However, the search committee may ask candidates to provide them during the later stages of the interview process.)
