A free, collaborative, and curated digital bibliography dedicated to the field of Jesuit Studies is now available. The Jesuit Online Bibliography (jesuitonlinebibliography.com) provides the records for Jesuit Studies scholarship produced in the 21st century.
The editorial oversight of the Jesuit Online Bibliography is a collaborative effort among its three founding Jesuit institutions -- the Archivum Romanum Societatis Iesu in Rome, the Jesuitica Project at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, and the Institute for Advanced Jesuit Studies at Boston College. Each institution is represented on the project’s board of directors, and each appoints an associate editor to work with the bibliography’s executive editor and assistant editors. Voluntary contributors, identified on the database, regularly submit records, and individual scholars, publishers, and librarians are also encouraged to contribute. Other institutions also collaborate on the project. With this international network of support and collaboration, the Jesuit Online Bibliography is available in open access.
The project launches with more than 15,000 records of books, book chapters, journal articles, book reviews, dissertations, conference papers, and multimedia content. Users may browse these records or search them simultaneously. Searches may be modified by the records’ format, authors, publication years, languages, or keywords (such as the subjects, time periods, locations, or Jesuits examined). An individual record provides, when available, the citation, abstract, subject category, and any direct links to the source content and publisher. Users may create a free account to save searches, bookmark results, or email records.
The Jesuit Online Bibliography was developed at Boston College Libraries in collaboration with the Institute for Advanced Jesuit Studies. Staff from the Archivum Romanum Societatis Iesu and the Jesuitica Project at KU Leuven provided regular consultations during the process. The database was built using open source technology, and the code used is available in the Libraries’ GitHub repository (https://github.com/BCDigSchol/jesuit-bibliography). All the records of the Jesuit Online Bibliography will soon be aggregated within the search capabilities of the Portal to Jesuit Studies (jesuitportal.com) -- another open-access resource.
