Religious Studies Department—Catholic Theology Position
Job Description and Responsibilities:
The Department of Religious Studies of Mercyhurst University invites applicants for a full-time, tenure-track position (open rank) in Catholic Theology. In addition to teaching (the load is 3-4), the successful candidate will direct the William C. Sennett Institute for Mercy and Catholic Studies, coordinate the Mercyhurst University’s biennial Joan D. Chittister Lecture Series, and develop programming for the wider Catholic and Erie community.
In this role, the University expects the successful candidate will engage in public scholarship that will benefit the community as well as inform the candidate’s teaching. The University stresses excellence in teaching and the successful applicant will develop and teach courses in Catholic Studies in order to help grow the Catholic Studies Minor. The applicant will also teach at least two University Capstone Ethics courses each year and may teach a Religious Studies course.
Status: This is a permanent, full-time, tenure-track (open rank) position in Catholic Theology. Salary determined is dependent on qualifications and experience.
Qualifying Experience/Education:
• Terminal degree from an accredited institution
• Professional teaching experience in the field of Catholic theology

The area of theological specialization is open, but applicants whose work intersects in some way with the five critical concerns of the Sisters of Mercy are especially invited to apply. These concerns involve care for the earth, dignity for immigrants, nonviolence, combatting racism, and justice for women.

Supplemental Information/ Other Conditions of Employment:
Finalists must communicate well and successfully complete an interview process which includes a teaching demonstration. Verification of all earned degrees through the receipt of original transcripts, acceptable background clearance reports, authorization to be employed in the United States, and positive references are required.
